Stand on the receiving dock of a consumer goods plant and watch the pallets come back. Half the stack is white wood with a split stringer, a missing lead board and somebody else's label. A 48forty trailer backs in, swaps a load of repaired Standard A pallets for the broken cores, and the cycle starts again. That swap is 48forty's business, and it runs it well. It is also the clearest picture of a wood pallet program: a repair loop you pay into every month. An APS lease replaces the loop with one fleet that lasts roughly 100 to 200+ trips.
APS vs 48forty Verdict
Which Pallet Program Should You Choose?
48forty Solutions and APS both make sure a pallet is under your product when the truck arrives. 48forty manages the life of a wood pallet: deliver, haul away, repair, resell. APS takes the life cycle off your desk with a leased fleet of 100 percent recycled HDPE Smart Pallets, with a sensor module built in, for one all-inclusive monthly cost.
So the verdict follows your lanes. If your pallets scatter across the open retail network, a national wood recycler like 48forty is a sensible way to buy wood. If they cycle between facilities you control, a Smart Pallet lease costs one number, lasts ten times longer and reports back.
Choose APS If
- Your Pallets Come BackYour loads run between plants, DCs and partners you can name, so the fleet is recovered, not repurchased.
- You Want to Stop Rebuying PalletsA Smart Pallet runs roughly 100 to 200+ trips, and the lease carries no replacement cost.
- You Need to Know What Happened in TransitTemperature, humidity, shock and location are logged on the pallet, with no reader at either end.
- You Answer to an AuditorFSMA, GDP and GMP reviews want a record. A washable pallet gives you a timestamped chain of custody for those records.
Choose 48forty If
- You Ship One-Way Into Open NetworksIf your pallets leave for receivers you cannot name, a national buyer and repairer of used wood is the right structure.
- You Buy Wood Pallets at Many SitesIf you need 48 by 40s at dozens of plants this week, 48forty's plants, partners and fleet do that job well.
48forty Pallet Management vs APS Pallet Leasing
Managing Repairs or Leasing a Fleet
48forty takes its name from the 48 by 40 pallet it recycles. It was the recycled-pallet arm of IFCO and then CHEP, and has carried its own name since Brambles sold it to Grey Mountain Partners in 2018. Tony Brooks became CEO in July 2026. By its own July 2026 count the Houston-based company runs more than 240 facilities, including 71 company-operated recycling plants and 160 onsite locations, and more than 850 service providers. Its other pages give 61 to 73 plants.
Pallet management, in 48forty's sense, means owning every step of a wood pallet's working life except the trip. Its pallet management services start with supply: recycled 48 by 40s in three published grades, plus new and custom pallets. Then come retrieval and onsite crews that sort and repair pallets at your plant or DC. The PalTrax portal handles orders, pickups, shipping documents and invoices. What you pay is quoted: 48forty publishes no rate card, and its 2025 guide says programs price per pallet purchased, per trip rented, or as a management fee.
APS designs and manages custom pallet leasing programs for closed-loop partners: a fleet of Smart Pallets sized to your lanes, leased for one all-inclusive monthly cost covering the pallet, the embedded sensor module, exception reporting in Pulse and visibility, with no capital purchase and no replacement cost. Our guide to closed-loop pallet programs lays the five models side by side. The fit table is our editorial read of the evidence below.
| Operation | APS | 48forty |
|---|---|---|
| One-Way Retail & Grocery Distribution | Poor fit | Best fit |
| Multi-Site Wood Pallet Buying | Workable | Best fit |
| Closed-Loop Plant & DC Lanes | Best fit | Workable |
| Cold Chain, Pharma & Food Safety | Best fit | Poor fit |
| Automated Warehouses & ASRS | Best fit | Workable |
Recycled Wood vs HDPE Pallet Spec Sheet
A Repaired Board or a Molded Deck
48forty pallets are recycled wood pallets: 48 by 40 stringer cores, repaired and resold as Premium A, Standard A or Standard B, graded by which stringer repairs are allowed. APS Smart Pallets are made from 100 percent recycled HDPE, consistent to under 1 percent, up to 30 percent lighter than wood, with RFID tags and a cellular sensor module built in.
Three scored groups follow, each out of ten: cost and lifespan, data, and hygiene. Hygiene is where wood gives up the most ground, because a porous board needs ISPM 15 treatment for export and a molded HDPE deck does not. The data group decides the purchase for anyone shipping product that can spoil.

Wood Pallet Cost & Lifespan
The Cheap Pallet Is the One You Keep Buying
A recycled wood pallet is cheap to buy. The argument is about what happens next. A wood pallet program is a flow: cores out, repaired pallets in, a pallet recycling plant in the middle, an invoice every time the flow turns. A lease is a stock: one fleet, one monthly number, no replacement cost.
Wood Pallet Cost per Trip
Divide the Price by the Trips, Not the Pallets
Wood pallet cost looks small until you divide it by trips. Fastmarkets reported in September 2024 that most unmodified GMA 48 by 40 pallets traded at $11 to $13 in Seattle, and that used pallets in good to average condition sold for $5 to $7 in most key delivered markets. How many trips that buys depends on who you ask. 48forty's own 2025 guide says a pallet can in some cases make up to 15 trips before it is beyond repair. Our Sustainability page puts white wood at about 3 to 5 and pooled wood at about 15, against roughly 100 to 200+ for a Smart Pallet.
Wood wins the purchase order and loses the decade. Our plastic pallet lifespan statistics post works the cost-per-trip math with every assumption labeled.
Pallet Repair & Replacement Cycles
What Happens to a Core After the Dock
Pallet repair is the engine of 48forty's model, and the data on it is good. A Virginia Tech and NWPCA survey of the industry's 2021 activity, published in 2025, found that 78 percent of the used cores recyclers received were repaired and sold, with under 1 percent landfilled. The industry produced an estimated 919 million new and 280 million repaired or remanufactured wood pallets that year.
Pallet recycling at that scale is a real achievement: Virginia Tech and the USDA Forest Service found only 13.1 million pallets landfilled at municipal solid waste facilities in 2016, down more than 90 percent from 1998. The EPA wood waste data shows the other side: in 2018, 12.2 million of the 18.1 million tons of wood in municipal waste went to landfills, and the 3.1 million tons EPA counted as recycled was wood pallets, usually chipped for mulch or bedding. A Smart Pallet stays in service for roughly 100 to 200+ trips, then is shredded back into the APS HDPE stream.
Upfront Pallet Cost
Why Neither Program Asks for Capital
A recycled wood pallet costs a few dollars, so nobody books wood as a capital asset. APS leases the fleet, so nobody writes a check for plastic either. The difference is what the operating line buys. With 48forty it buys a pallet, a pickup and a repair. With APS it buys the pallet, the embedded sensors, exception reporting and visibility in one flat monthly cost, designed to price at or below the wood program. Our pallet industry costs post has the price history to check against your invoices.
Bottom Line
Wood is cheap per pallet and expensive per decade. A used pallet at 2024's $5 to $7 that needs repair every few trips is a recurring charge dressed as a bargain. The lease makes it one flat monthly cost, designed to price at or below the wood program, sensors included.
Pallet Retrieval & Tracking Data
Hauling Pallets Back or Hearing From Them
Pallet retrieval is where the models look alike and work differently. 48forty retrieves pallets with trucks: dock sweeps, drop trailers, a private fleet, and pickups coordinated through more than 850 partners. What it knows about your pallets is what PalTrax records: orders, pickups, shipping documents, invoices and, in the company's words, real-time inventory tracking and reporting. That is a count of pallets moved between you and 48forty, not the location of one pallet right now, because a standard wood pallet has nothing on it to say so.
APS pallets report where they are. Every Smart Pallet carries cellular GPS, and the closed loop is built for 100 percent retrieval capability: a pallet parked at the wrong yard shows up as exactly that, not as a shrink line at quarter end. Our pallet tracking technology page walks through the module and Pulse.
Pallet Condition Monitoring
Temperature, Humidity & Shock, Logged on the Pallet
A standard wood pallet cannot tell you the load got warm. It has no sensor, no power and no memory, so a recycled wood program carries no temperature, humidity or shock data of its own.
Every Smart Pallet ships with a sensor module that logs temperature, humidity, shock and location. It runs on exception-based reporting: quiet while conditions hold, awake the moment a threshold is crossed, when it writes a timestamped, geolocated event and Pulse routes the exception to the right person. A pallet of vaccine creeping toward its limit at a cross-dock gets flagged there, not three weeks later in a quality investigation.
Pallet Location Visibility
Where It Is, Not How Many Came Back
In a managed wood program, location is an inventory question. A portal like PalTrax can show, say, 480 pallets delivered to a plant last week and 410 cores picked up. The 70 in between are a reconciliation, not a map.
For a load worth protecting, a reconciliation is not enough. APS pallets locate themselves over cellular networks, with no scanning, no facility readers and no carrier cooperation. The pallet logs a timestamped, geolocated event when it moves and builds a chain of custody independent of the carrier's systems. On a repeating lane that record becomes dwell time by facility and lane. A wood program answers how many came back. A Smart Pallet answers where each one is.
Bottom Line
A pickup schedule is not visibility. 48forty's network will get used pallets off your dock. It will not tell you what the load went through on the way. If the hours on the truck matter, the data has to ride with the pallet.
Wood vs Plastic Pallet Hygiene
Heat Treatment, Lab Swabs & a Washable Deck
Wood is porous, and the evidence on what that means for food is public. In the National Consumers League's 2010 exploratory test of 70 wood and 70 plastic pallets from the Houston and Miami/Tampa areas, 10 percent of the wood pallets carried E. coli against 1.4 percent of the plastic, and 2.9 percent of the wood pallets tested positive for Listeria, with none of the plastic. ISPM 15 requires raw-wood packaging in international trade to get an approved treatment and carry the mark. Conventional heat treatment means at least 56 degrees Celsius for 30 continuous minutes throughout the wood, and fumigation is the other approved route. Virginia Tech's 2021 survey found only about 23 percent of repaired and remanufactured pallets were heat treated, so an exporter buying recycled wood asks for the treated grade, which 48forty offers.
APS Smart Pallets are non-porous, moisture and pest resistant and pressure-washable. USDA APHIS lists plastic pallets among the products not subject to its wood packaging regulation, so there is no treatment and no stamp to keep current. Two honest points for the other side. The recycled pallets from 48forty's own plants have carried Sustainable Forestry Initiative chain-of-custody certification since April 2024. And Penn State's 2020 life cycle study found heat-treated wood pallets slightly lower in carbon footprint than plastic ones, which it described as typically made from petroleum or natural gas. Our answer is the loop: recycled HDPE, roughly 100 to 200+ trips, then shredded back into the APS HDPE stream. The pallet sustainability page has the material, the recovery model and the trip counts.
Bottom Line
Wood can be treated for a shipment. HDPE can be washed after every trip. Choose a heat-treated recycled pallet when you need wood for export. Choose APS when the audit wants a washable surface and the thermal history of the load on the same pallet.
Best Pallet Program for Your Operation
Match the Program to the Lanes
Pallet recycling companies and pallet leasing companies are not fighting over the same freight. The recycler wins where pallets scatter and the product is forgiving. The lease wins where pallets come back and the product, the auditor or the insurer has questions. The pallet services you need follow from which of those describes your network.
Read the two cards below by asking where your pallets end up at the end of a week. A network that scatters wood across retail and grocery DCs fits the 48forty card. A loop that brings the same pallets back to your own docks, with an auditor or an insurer watching, fits the APS card.
Who APS Is Best For
Closed Loops With Something to Protect
- Cold Chain, Pharma & Food ShippersA washable pallet with temperature and humidity logged on it, exceptions routed to the right person in transit, and a chain of custody for GDP and FSMA records.
- Plant-to-DC & Automotive LoopsLanes that repeat between facilities you control and feed ASRS and robotic lines that need a pallet consistent to under 1 percent.
- Operators Tired of the Repair LineYou have watched the core count, the repair invoice and the replacement order every month and would rather pay one flat number.
Who 48forty Is Best For
Wood at National Scale
- One-Way Shippers Into Retail & GroceryLoads end at DCs you do not control, so you want 71 plants and 850-plus partners buying back and resupplying wood wherever it lands.
- Multi-Site Manufacturers Buying WoodYou need Premium A, Standard A or Standard B 48 by 40s delivered just in time to many plants, with PalTrax for orders, pickups and invoices.
- Retail DCs That Want the Pallet Yard Staffed48forty's affiliate Relogistics runs onsite pallet programs at more than 170 retail distribution centers, by 48forty's 2025 count.
APS vs 48forty Pros & Cons
The Honest List
48forty has real strengths, starting with a national recycling network and one vendor for supply, retrieval and onsite labor. It publishes its grades and works for freight that never comes back, which describes most of the retail world.
Our column has two honest cons of its own: an APS lease needs a closed loop, and it is a commitment. Weigh those against a repair cycle that never ends and a wood deck that tells you nothing about the trip.
APS
Pros
- Ten Times the Service LifeRoughly 100 to 200+ trips before recycling, against about 3 to 5 for white wood, so the fleet is not rebought every few trips.
- Data Rides With the PalletCellular GPS, temperature, humidity and shock are logged on the pallet and routed by Pulse, with no readers.
- One All-Inclusive Monthly CostPallet, sensors, exception reporting and visibility in one number, designed to price at or below a wood program.
- Clean, Consistent & Export-ReadyNon-porous, pressure-washable, under 1 percent dimensional variance, up to 30 percent lighter than wood, no ISPM 15 treatment.
Cons
- Needs a Closed LoopIf your pallets leave for receivers you cannot name, a leased fleet is the wrong shape, and we will say so.
- A Lease Is a CommitmentA monthly fleet cost is predictable, and that cuts both ways: you pay it in a slow month too.
48forty
Pros
- A National Recycling NetworkBy its own 2026 figures, 71 company-operated plants, 160 onsite locations and 850-plus service providers, handling 554 million-plus pallets a year.
- Supply, Retrieval & Onsite Labor in One VendorPallets delivered just in time, cores bought back and hauled away, and onsite pallet programs at retail DCs through its affiliate Relogistics.
- Published Grades & Certified Recycled ContentPremium A, Standard A and Standard B specifications are public, and SFI chain-of-custody certification covers the recycled pallets from its own plants.
- Works for One-Way FreightIt needs no loop. The pallet is cheap enough to lose, and the network is big enough to buy it back.
Cons
- The Repair Cycle Never Ends48forty's own guide says a wood pallet can in some cases make up to 15 trips before it is beyond repair, so the repair invoices keep coming.
- No Condition or Transit DataNothing on a standard wood pallet measures temperature, humidity, shock or location. PalTrax tracks orders and invoices, not the pallet on the truck.
- Wood Hygiene & Export TreatmentWood is porous, and export loads need ISPM 15 treated pallets, so exporters order the heat-treated grade rather than standard recycled stock.
APS vs 48forty FAQ
Questions Buyers Ask Before Switching
Buyers comparing a managed wood program with a plastic lease tend to ask the same three things. Here are short answers, with the outside figures sourced at the end of the post.
What Does 48forty Solutions Do?
48forty Solutions is a Houston-based pallet management company that supplies recycled, new and custom wood pallets, picks up used pallets, repairs them in its own plants and sells them again. In July 2026 it described more than 240 facilities, including 71 company-operated recycling plants and 160 onsite locations. Customers order, schedule pickups and pay through its PalTrax portal. Its recycled pallets are wood and carry no sensors.
How Many Trips Does a Recycled Wood Pallet Last?
It depends on the grade, the lane and how often it is repaired. 48forty's own guide says a wood pallet can in some cases make up to 15 trips before it is beyond repair. APS puts white wood at about 3 to 5 trips and pooled wood at about 15. A Smart Pallet is built for roughly 100 to 200+ trips before it is recycled.
Can a Plastic Pallet Lease Cost Less Than a Wood Pallet Program?
In a closed loop, that is what the lease is designed to do: one all-inclusive monthly cost for the pallet, sensors, exception reporting and visibility, designed to price at or below what a company already pays for its wood pallet program, with no capital purchase and no replacement cost. For one-way shipments into networks you do not control, a recycled wood program like 48forty's is usually the cheaper structure.
